What is the Austrian Highway Vignette?
The Austrian highway vignette is a toll sticker that grants the right to use the Austrian motorway network. It is managed by ASFINAG (Autobahnen- und Schnellstraßen-Finanzierungs-Aktiengesellschaft) and is mandatory for all motor vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes.
Since 2018, in addition to the traditional adhesive vignette, there is also the digital e-vignette, which is directly linked to the vehicle's licence plate. This has greatly simplified the purchase and use, especially for foreign vehicles.
The vignette requirement applies on all Austrian motorways and expressways. Certain routes, such as the Brenner Tunnel or the Tauern Tunnel, are also subject to an additional special toll.

The e-Vignette: Digital and Convenient
Since 2018, the e-vignette has been a fully-fledged alternative to the adhesive vignette. It is linked directly to the vehicle's licence plate and stored in the ASFINAG system. Checks are carried out automatically by cameras.

Enforcement and Fines
Vignette checks in Austria are carried out both by automatic camera systems and by manual checks by police and ASFINAG staff. The system is very effective and comprehensive.
